introduction
The most important piece of information about counselling is that the approach or modality being used always comes second to the “therapeutic relationship”, or more plainly how safe the client feels sharing their thoughts and experiences with the counsellor. We can explore and discover what helps and hinders your sense of safety or ability to talk about your feelings.
Research consistently shows so long as the therapeutic relationship is strong, most types of therapy can be successful. I will work with you to figure out what approach or approaches may be most helpful for tackling your challenges and honouring your way of being.
You don’t need to know or learn anything about the details of therapy to get started, but in case you are curious I most frequently use a range of counselling approaches and techniques such as:
Person-Centred Therapy
Existential Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Internal Family Systems
Psychodynamic Therapy
Art and Creative exercises
I specialise in
-
Working with and healing from experiences like childhood trauma, sexual assault, displacement, and violence requires patience and an understanding of how the mind and body can be affected by difficult circumstances. We can work at a gentle pace, allowing you to change patterns and become more present in a safe and contained way.
-
Our identities and sex lives can be fundamental pieces in building a content and healthy life. If you are questioning a part of your identity, wanting to release shame or improve intimacy, we can work on these in a way which is empowering and mindful of what is important to you.
-
Losing a loved one, a pet, a job, an identity or anything else can have a profound affect on our mood and how we continue day to day. We can work on processing difficult emotions, finding meaning in grief and figuring out the next steps.
Similarly, a fear of death, whether it’s close on the horizon or a more abstract concern, can greatly affect how we lead our lives both consciously and unconsciously. We can talk about and work through existential concerns so that you can avoid overwhelm and focus on your values.
-
Anxiety is a natural, and at times useful, emotion but excessive worry or panic can be frightening and limit what we engage with. We can holistically assess the roots of your anxiety and figure out the strategies that allow you to take part and be more comfortable in all areas of your life.
You can bring any problems or worries you’d like to therapy. There’s no issue too big or too small and it will always be a judgement-free space.
Not everyone knows where to begin, and if that’s the case for you that’s completely ok. Many people need a little help building emotional literacy skills at the beginning of counselling. So, if you’re unsure about how you’ll chat about your thoughts and feelings, this is still a space for you.
I have specific training and experience in working with LGBTQI+ and Neurodivergent people and always endeavour to offer an affirmative and accessible service.
Finally, therapy can be a heavy business but it’s important to note sessions can and so often do include laughter, brightness and pride.
